Developmental Milestones

Knowing when to intervene

Developmental milestones are abilities that most, not all, children achieve by a specific age. You must remember that each child is unique and may progress at a different rate.

However, if there is concern that your child is experiencing a developmental delay, speak with your pediatrician!

Occupational therapy can help get your child back on the right track!

OT's evaluate to determine areas of weakness, the reasons behind them, and break them down into their individual components, which can then be modified, strengthened, and improved.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends developmental screenings at 9, 18, or 30 months or if there is a concern

If your child was born premature , you must adjust to their "corrected age" until they turn two years old (generally children catch up to their normal range by this age). Use this corrected age when viewing developmental milestones.

How to do it

Subtract the number of weeks premature from the number of weeks since your child's birth.

Example

Your baby was born 16 weeks ago, but was 4 weeks early.

16-4= 12; Your baby's corrected age is 12 weeks or 3 months old.
